Samba

Samba was one application i used when I wanted to build a small network on the internet cafe. This network had 5 linux boxes (Pc with Linux), 5 windows 2000 machines and 2 mac running os X. Samba was the solution to make the main computer recieve the broadband passing through another Linux that worked as a gateway or firewall to enhance optimum security.

This draft of the network/intranet that I did consist on four Linux boxes, 3 PC's and two Mac's G3 and G4. The network had a firewall and a server to protect the outgoing and incoming of data.

The network proyect had a Linux box working as a server and another Linux box working as a firewall. The Linux server could execute a dinamic server-side website which could keep the time of internet time for the costumers. This will allow the cafe manager to digitally update the ammount of time their costumer spend on line and auto-matically send them messages in case their costumer need more time. This was done through an instant messengers similar to the winpop of a windows based lan. However this application could sit local server and run on different operating systems such as windows and macs.

Samba helped create the structure for the cafe administration to supply the broadband and the sharing he needed for specific net and games servers allowing them to interact between each other.
